5- You interviewed someone before, they weren't right. So you gave them another chance. 
**9 times out of 10... trust your first gut.**

6- When someone lists more than 2 jobs they have at any given time.
**No, you do not do 10 "board" positions simultaneously and well.**

7- If someone has a new startup and a podcast? Immediate no. 
**Grow the business, not your brand, first.**

8- You walk into a startup founder's office and the walls are covered in articles about them...
**Don't invest.**

9- They have a company with 3+ founders.
**That's a no. Too many cooks mean a disaster in the kitchen.**

10- The founder prioritizes meetups and speaking events over doing the work. 
**Ship product, then take interviews.**

11- Someone refers to themselves as founder often & unprompted?
No bueno.

## 1. A deal Is NOT done until it's signed
This goes without saying, but whatever you do: PUT. IT. ON. PAPER.
I lost a huge deal for a Rayman video game I made because I didn't put it on paper. Big mistake.

## 2. Not being distribution focused
Being a techie I was always focused on developing the product & making it better every day, rather than even thinking about how will I get customers & take the product to them.
It was a hard lesson to learn. There's no point in building a product if your target customers don't even know that you exist.

## 3. Envisioning the product way too ambitiously
Like any other first-time founder, I underestimated the complexities of building, launching, marketing & selling a product. 
I was dreaming up a product that was far beyond the scope of reality, My bold ambitions were ready to shake the world with my product.
_Yeah, that didn't happen!_

## 4. Not having a clear understanding of the users

I built a startup for parents but I wasn't a dad yet. I was mostly operating just on assumptions.  
And let me tell you, your assumptions are just fueled by your biases.
Now I'm building Tweet Hunter for fellow creators, and operating directly from experience.
It's much easier to understand your user when YOU are the target user

## 5. Hiring friends
Don't hire your friends just because they're your friends. Hire by:
- Motivation
- Competence

And no matter how much time you spend choosing, no matter how high the bar is, Double it.

## 6. Hiring too many people
Taking on too many employees can be counterproductive; I learned this the hard way after spending countless hours managing my interns. 
Turns out, doing it myself was much more effective!

## 7. Not having a core founding team.

**30% Of Something Is Better Than 100% Of Nothing**

Great co-founders are the true hack. You can't expect employees to give their 100% if they own 0% of the company. With cofounders, they'll go above and beyond because incentives are aligned
Your relationship with your co-founder is unique, so it's bound to have its hiccups. But you can use every bump as an opportunity for growth

## 8. Spending time & energy on raising funds
Seeking funds is not bad, but the point is to understand "when & why" you need funds. Everyone thinks you're crazy until you raise funds, but crazy is good. It's crazy that win. Don't raise funds for:
- Press
- Bragging rights
- Validation of an idea
Not worth it.

## 9. Working 2 years on a product without any substantial growth
You've to be optimistic about the product you're building, don't get me wrong; but you must know if & when it's time to pull the plug, don't waste your most valuable asset, time, on a pursuit that's going nowhere

## 10. Not having a financial backup
As a founder, you need to have an emergency fund ready for when something unexpected happens. The cost of starting up can be expensive, & if you don't have money set aside for unexpected costs, it could ruin things.

## 11. Acting on every advice anyone gives
You can always turn to others for advice, but you're responsible for how the story will play out. People with advice don't have to live with the consequences, you have to!

## 12. Not taking enough breaks
Trying to 'have it all' can quickly take its toll on startup founders. Juggling the delicate balance of building & networking without taking breaks can be damaging in the long run. Don't forget to pause every now and again!

- Stop reading 100+ business books & just start.
- If people root for you to fail, cut them out of your life.

- You learn 100x more by trying than by reading ab someone else.
- If you don't know how to sell, you're going to struggle.
- Thick skin is a prerequisite for building in public.
- You go 10x faster by supporting people, not tearing them down.
- No matter how good your product is, someone will hate it.
- Price whatever you offer at a rate you'd be comfortable paying.
- Your network can either speed you up or slow you down.
- Pessimists are often right, and optimists are often wealthy.
- Stop asking everyone, and start figuring shit out on your own.

- Always over-communicate.
- Assume you can learn something from everyone.

- Assume everyone you talk to is also full of shit.
- Your business heroes are regular people who took action.
- If you can make $1, you can make $1,000.

- If you can make $1,000 you can probably make $100k.
- Don't ask random people questions. Ask your customers.
- You don't need meditation and sunlight. You need action.
- Don't "find a mentor". Do interesting things & attract mentors.
- Promote yourself online every day.
- Write daily for at least 30 minutes.
- Ignore haters. They are the least interesting people.
- Help others and let them reciprocate. If they never do, move on.
- Go to therapy and be honest.
- Drink less alcohol.
- Start with one revenue stream, but diversify shortly after.
- Anyone selling instant results is a con. 
- Systems beat motivation & discipline every time.
- Quit focusing on tools and tech. Just use what you know.
- Experiment often, but never with 2 new variables.
- Use data to create better content.

- Never plagiarize people but borrow shamelessly.
- Stop trying to be cool. Be successful. Cool will come.
- You're a lot less clever than you think you are. Be clear.
- Be on time for important things. You're not a teenager.
- Nobody is coming to save you.
- Arguing online is a waste of time and energy.
- Don't be arrogant, but have a mindset that you can do anything.
- You never know what will resonate. Try a lot of different things.
- Don't argue with your customers.
- Everyone has the same 24 hours. It's how you use it.
- It's not helpful to study Elon and Bezos if you're making $0.
- Nobody cares about you. They care what you can do for them.
- Quitters win a lot because they know when to give up.

## 1. Talk to people
You can't make a dollar without understanding people's problems.
Too many people skip this step.
Go talk to your prospective customers.
Find out what their top 2-3 most painful problems are.
Can you solve them? If so, then...

## 2. Grow a small audience
Start sharing info and advice they care about.
Tweet daily about what you know and what you learn.
Show them you care about solving the problems they told you about.
"Here's what I heard - here's how I'd fix that."

## 3. Build an email list
Once you have a small audience, then consider showing off more of your expertise.
Start a newsletter or build a free guide.
Offer it up and ask people to subscribe.
Deplatform your most interested users to a list that you control.

## 4. Use easy tech
Tech doesn't matter in the beginning.
Use what's cheap and easy, or what you already know how to use.
Stop looking for the "perfect stack".
It doesn't exist.
Just get started - you can always change later.

## 5. Build an Offer
If you have a small email list, you need something to offer them.
Go back to step 1.
What was that big problem? 
Create a 60-minute program to walk them through that helps solve it.
Price it reasonably & talk about it in your emails. Link to it.

## 6. Sell Something
If you've done all of this, you'll likely find a few people book with you.
Does this mean you have a scalable business? No, of course not.
But, hopefully you'll start experimenting & having fun. Trying new things.
